The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors has approved a negotiating agreement to transform the current County Probation Department site into a 104-unit affordable workforce housing complex. Designed by the Cearnal Collective, the proposed four-to-five-story building will utilize modular construction to provide housing for low- to moderate-income county employees and downtown workers. The project aims for an expedited completion date of February 2029 and will be situated on county-owned land leased to the developer. While focusing on high density to ensure project feasibility, the development is a key part of the county’s broader initiative to utilize underused real estate for attainable local housing.
