UC Santa Barbara has established a permanent downtown presence with the acquisition of a 1.35-acre property at the corner of State and Gutierrez Streets. The purchase includes the 18,000-square-foot former Staples building and the newly constructed 78-unit Soltara Apartments. While the university is currently exploring several uses for the commercial space—ranging from an innovation hub and "maker space" to event and lecture facilities—the residential complex will immediately serve as vital workforce housing for UCSB faculty. Current commercial tenant Reid’s Appliances will continue to share the property under its existing lease, ensuring a mix of academic, residential, and local business activity at this high-visibility gateway to downtown.
