The intersection of State and Carrillo Streets has been transformed into a vibrant public gallery through a "Zapotec-inspired" asphalt art installation. Funded by a prestigious $100,000 grant from the Bloomberg Foundation, this project celebrates Santa Barbara’s connection to Oaxacan culture and the local Saturday Farmers’ Market community. The geometric design, which features bright pinks, oranges, and blues, incorporates indigenous symbolism like the feathered serpent deity Quetzalcoatl to represent the intersection of the human experience and imagination. Painted by a team of local artists and professional painters, the installation includes a protective coating to withstand foot and vehicle traffic, providing a bold, eye-catching gateway to the downtown corridor.
